Supplements for anxiety and Depression. What I take to stop feeling like a Crazy Lady

Managing the quality of our food intake is imperative when dealing with a mental illness but I’ve found that the way our foods are grown today and are being modified it is easy to find ourselves deficient in vital nutrients for optimal mental stability.  I have found supplements for anxiety and depression that are effective.

I don’t believe in using supplements instead of good foods or to make up for bad food choices. Use supplements to help bring your body to its optimum functioning ability. I’ve experimented with many, MANY, supplements with hopes of finding the one that will bring me balance to mental and physical state.

These few that follow are things I take that I’ve found pack a punch to my wellbeing.

Evening Primrose oil

These are a game changer for hormone balance. These help balance hormones, especially those associated with PMS. Also helps with skin problems like eczema and acne and helps with sleep too! This was the first supplement I took that gave me a noticeable difference in how I felt, and I’ve tried a lot.

The changes are gradual which made me skeptical so I quit taking them for a while and found they definitely have an effect on my mood which I was super surprised about. I use these evening primrose oil capsules found on amazon. Give them a try, the benefits, even if subtle are worth it!

Magnesium

The statistic for our in country says 80% of people are not getting enough magnesium. That’s a lot! There are a host of dangers associated with a magnesium deficiency.

Why do we need magnesium?

If you have unexplained fatigue, headaches, weakness, muscle spasms or eye twitching this may be a sign of a magnesium deficiency. Studies show the role of magnesium in the body I majorly underestimated. It plays a huge role in the body’s detox process.

Most interesting to me is that it acts as a precursor for neurotransmitters like serotonin. (Hello happy brain!). Blood tests are not a good indicator of this deficiency. Talk to your doctor or try taking this magnesium supplement and see if positive benefits begin to manifest.

Magnesium supplements are also supposed to have a very mild laxative effect but I haven’t noticed anything like this. I tend to be thirsty and drink a lot more water while taking this.  I get them  here.

Update: I’ve recently switched to this magnesium lotion becuase I learned this is the easiest and most effective way to absorb magnesium.  This has a major calming effect, relaxing and has helped me sleep!  Which is a difficult task for me.

Melatonin

Melatonin is our bodies natural dark sensor. It tells our brain its nighttime and time to sleep. Unfortunately this natural rhythm of our body is tied to sunlight and the majority of us today are surrounded by unnatural light sources day and night.

I recommend following the rhythm of the sun as closely as possible. Keep lights dim at night helping your body naturally produce more melatonin for better sleep. However, because our culture and work schedules provide us 24 hour lifestyles a melatonin supplement is the next best thing for a good nights sleep.

I won’t go into the mental health ramifications of not getting a good amount of sleep because I’m sure we’ve all felt this to some degree. Suffering from lack of sleep long term can truly put our mental health state in danger.

Melatonin feels natural, is not addictive, and won’t leave you groggy the next day provided you take it early enough in the night and plan for a good nights sleep. Find them here.

D3

If you only take one supplement make it vitamin D3. We get vitamin D from the sun but most of us are not getting enough, especially in the winter months.

Taking vitamins is not like taking other prescription medication. The results take consistency and the benefits increase with time.

D3 supplement

With vitamin D3 you will:

• Have Better skin (Like no more psoriasis)
• Get rid of seasonal blues
• Improve overall mood
• Balance those monthly mood swings

Just to name a few very noticeable differences you can expect. Find D3 here.

D mannose

This one may not be for mental health but has been supper helpful to me because UTIs drive me crazy so i had to throw it in.

If you are to suffer the occasional urinary tract infection keep D Mannose in your toolbox. It may not help with a full blown infection but I have used it at times I felt one coming on and it worked to prevent it. If you have situations where you know one might put you at risk for an infection, like a little fun time with your partner, take this as a preventive measure.

I do take these 5 supplements regularly and have found a benefit to all of them.

I don’t mean to be insulting by using the word crazy.

Depression and anxiety are the worst! It can be frustrating and make you feel crazy when you can get a handle on things.

  • If you have feelings about hurting yourself or others.
  • If you live in fear because of trauma
  • If you suffer from grief
  • If you can’t get out of bed
  • If you can’t function as you would “normally” want to
  • Whatever it is that is in your head only you know

Your progress in life can feel halted by these things but can be used to make you stronger. It definitely doesn’t feel like it at the time of an anxiety attack major depressive episode.

My experience

Supplements can help balance your body but can not do the same things for you antidepressants and anxiety medication or whatever prescription you may need.

If treating your symptoms on your own with natural options isn’t giving you the relief you need please seek the relief that can be found through prescription medication.

As I write this I am taking lexapro for anxiety and depression as well as an anti- anxiety med I have for emergencies. There are times I don’t take these and there are times when I can not overcome the struggle without it.

My hope is that someday I can feel healed of this darkness but for now I hope to encourage others to seek the help they need as well as find encouragement from my experience.

Today is an amazing day! The weather is beautiful and I am enjoying every minute of it. There is hope and healing. I did not always feel this way.  Continue to take action towards your own healing.

Pay attention to that voice in your head that wants to fight and knows there is light at the end of the tunnel. That’s the voice of truth.
